Golden Nuggets: O'Neil says the right things

Your San Francisco 49ers links for Thursday, May 26th 2016

I may be completely in the minority on this one--but I think Jim O'Neil won the day today. Now to be fair, I still need to see what he does outside of Cleveland to know if he's competent as a defensive coordinator, but the guy speaks with a great amount of charisma and passion (echoing Eric Reid's statements), that I feel like he was a good hire. When I heard Eric Mangini in interviews last year, something was just...missing. I don't know what it was, but I felt like I was convincing myself Mangini as a coordinator was going to be 'OK'. I think with O'Neil, his defense is going to work well with the talent in San Francisco.

It's all going to boil down to what I see throughout the season. I still think the 49ers have an immense amount of talent on the defensive side of the ball that was placed in awful situations due to lousy schemes. When the players themselves are trying to fix mistakes because no one knows what's going on, constantly, that's a coaching problem, not a talent problem. I do think though there's something there with the players, O'Neil, and the defense as a whole that we just didn't have last year (and it's not just the right answers, because we got plenty of those). Of course I'll be the first to throw my foot in my mouth in game 2 if something crazy like Jimmy Ward lining up at defensive tackle happens. Until then, color me optimistic.
