And just like that, the San Francisco 49ers 90-man roster is full. The team added another running back to fill out the depth chart, signing Kendall Gaskins to a two-year contract. The 49ers had previously waived Gaskins on May 6 to help make room for their undrafted free agents.
Gaskins has been on the 49ers roster on and off since September 2014. The team signed him to the practice squad on September 1, 2014, where he spent the entire length of the season. He then signed a reserve/future contract at the end of the season. He was part of final roster cuts in 2015, and was signed to the practice squad. He was promoted to the active roster on October 31, and appeared in nine games, rushing 16 times for 38 yards, and catching eight passes for 69 yards.
He joins a running back depth chart that includes Carlos Hyde, Mike Davis, Kelvin Taylor, Shaun Draughn, and DuJuan Harris. Gaskins is likely going to be a camp body later this summer. Once they know how the depth chart shakes out, a fourth quarter running back is a helpful role to fill.
