Blaine Gabbert will enter July’s training camp as the leading candidate for the 49ers starting quarterback position. He remains unchallenged for the role right now due to Colin Kaepernick working his way back from injury. Once training camp starts up though, Colin will be cleared to participate in team drills. During minicamp, he was only able to participate in individual and 7 on 7 drills.
When Colin is cleared to participate fully during training camp, then the real QB competition will begin. Both QBs seem to be good fits to run Chip Kelly’s offense. Colin has outstanding athletic ability, but Blaine has good ability as well. Colin has better arm strength, but Blaine seems to be more accurate with the football and that could help him win the job over Colin. Blaine has a head start in actually running the plays in practice, which gives him a leg up in the competition.
If Colin is fully healthy, then it would be hard to picture a scenario where Chip doesn’t start Colin just to see if he can work with Colin’s amazing skill set. Just a couple of seasons ago, Colin was a rising star in the league and receiving praise from analysts. He will get another shot with Chip to resurrect his career.
