The San Francisco 49ers have signed third round pick Will Redmond to his rookie contract. The team announced the signing Thursday afternoon, with Redmond inking the required four-year contract. The team is going through the rookie orientation program this week, which explains why he is at the facility. The rookie orientation program used to be conducted in Ohio with all the rookies, but the program was changed to team-by-team.
The 49ers selected Redmond with the fifth pick of the third round. We don’t know the full details yet, but according to Over The Cap, his projected contract includes a signing bonus of $872,556, with a first year base salary of the $450,000 league minimum. The team does not hold an option, but Redmond can earn additional money through the proven performance escalator. The PPE impacts his fourth year salary, based on his snap count his first three seasons.
The team announced all but two of their draft pick signings last month. Redmond and Joshua Garnett had not signed at that point. Garnett still has not signed, and is likely figuring out offsets on his guaranteed salaries. Redmond had not signed because the third round is viewed as the one round where agents can try and squeeze out some bonus money. There is a rookie wage scale, but the third round offers a little bit of wiggle room. The top six picks of the third round had not signed as of recently, but Redmond is now off the board.
