Golden Nuggets: Missing Minicamp

Tuesday, June 7th, 2016 edition of the Golden Nuggets, a daily compilation of San Francisco 49ers links from the Internet

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers finished their OTAs last week. The attendance was very good for the practices. Other than Ian Williams (ankle injury) and Joshua Garnett (classes still in session), all the players attended. Phil Dawson missed the 1st 2 weeks, but arrived last week. The players also came out of OTAs rather healthy. Only Dontae Johnson came out injured.

Today, the team starts their mandatory minicamp. Colin Kaepernick will not be cleared to participate in the practices this week. Colin will stay in the weight room and try to regain his strength after having surgeries this offseason. After Thursday's practice, players will have 6 weeks before training camp begins in late July. Colin is expected to use that time to stay in Santa Clara and keep working to get back to pre-injury form.

There was talk of him being cleared in late May, but it seems the team wants him ready for training camp in July. One reason that they possibly waited is to allow him to fully heal so they don't risk him getting injured. If he were to get injured, the team would be stuck paying him because of his contract. Colin will likely get a chance to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting spot and he will need to be healthy to show off his abilities to his new head coach.
