The San Francisco 49ers will apparently be a big part of the NFL’s plans to expand the game into China. Sports Business Journal is reporting one of the the 49ers 2018 games with the Los Angeles Rams will take place in China. The report states the game will likely serve as the Rams home opener, but the date is yet to be determined.
FOX NFL reporter Alex Marvez reported back in March that the NFL could begin playing in China in 2018. Roger Goodell subsequently stated that multiple teams had expressed interest in taking on such a game. 49ers owner John York is a member of the league’s International Committee, and is frequently in London for NFL contests over there. The 49ers played in a London game back in 2010.
The league will have to vote on the teams playing in the game, and SBJ is reporting such a vote would happen in October. They had this quote from NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy:
“We have not announced the Rams’ opponent in the event we play a game there. We have said we are exploring playing a game there but nothing is definitive.”
