“Heck of a competition”. Those were the words used by Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera when discussing the quarterback competition that the 49ers will be having this training camp. Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will be competing for the starting job when training camp begins July 30th. The winner of that competition will likely face Rivera’s Panthers in Week 2.
Ron Rivera described both Blaine and Colin as dynamic quarterbacks. He also said both have skill sets that fit nicely with Chip Kelly’s offense. Blaine and Colin are dynamic. Colin’s athleticism and arm strength are well documented. Blaine surprised a few people last season with his own athletic ability. There are no issues with their physical talent. Their ability to succeed comes down to the mental aspect of the position. Reading defenses, accurate throws, and making smart decisions will be the part of their game that will be scrutinized.
The 49ers season comes down to the 49ers QB play. Blaine has a head start working in Chip’s system. But Colin, who should be cleared to fully practice when training camp begins, will have every opportunity to win the starting job. He is the wild card because the league has seen what he can do if he is playing well. If he can rediscover that play, the 49ers could make some noise. It will be a ‘heck of a competition’ to see who wins the job over these next few weeks.
