The week of football is here! No more weeks without football. The San Francisco 49ers are scheduled to start training camp this Saturday, July 30th. All the position battles and roster moves that have been discussed endlessly will finally begin.
The big news of the day was that Anthony Davis finally filed his reinstatement papers. After retiring following the 2014-2015 season, he told his social media followers that he was going to make his comeback this season. Questions followed about when that was going to happen and there were reports that it was taking longer than expected because he may not want to come back to the 49ers. He tweeted that he was getting headaches working with Trent Baalke and Trent used the draft to shore up the offensive line. He was not sure Davis would play this season. Now that it looks like he is coming out of retirement, it will be interesting to see what the team does with him and how quickly he can get in football shape after he missed the beginning of the offseason.
The news that everyone expected to happen eventually took place on Monday. Tom Gamble was promoted to assistant general manager of the 49ers. Last season, he was the senior personnel executive. He was in the 49ers organization for eight seasons starting in 2005 before spending time in Philadelphia with Chip Kelly. He was reported to be a key in getting the 49ers to hire Chip during the offseason. He is also rumored to be the GM in waiting if Trent Baalke is fired. The move could put Trent in the hot seat this season. He needs his draft picks to have immediate impacts or he could soon find himself without a job.
