Training camps are starting to get underway, and it would appear that former San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Anquan Boldin will have a new home shortly. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting Boldin will sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions. Schefter said they are finalizing the numbers, but it is expected to happen fairly soon. Boldin initially met with the Lions back in June.
The Lions lost Calvin Johnson to retirement this year, and although Golden Tate will take on the No. 1 role, they have a lot of targets to divvy up. They signed Andre Roberts, but clearly they need as many bodies as they can find. Boldin is coming off a season in which he caught 69 passes for 789 yards and four touchdowns. It was on the lower end of things for his career, but injuries slowed him a bit. He’ll join a Lions offense that could put together a prolific passing attack this season. He is likely competing for No. 2 or No. 3 wide receiver work.
The 49ers had spoken with Boldin once the season ended, but Trent Baalke said both sides agreed to wait until after the draft at least before pursuing anything. I think that was basically just code for, he won’t be back. The 49ers will have plenty of targets of their own to fill with Boldin out the door. Quinton Patton is currently the team’s No. 2 receiver on the depth chart, but I have to think the competition is wide open for the starting spot opposite Torrey Smith.
