Big news the first day of 49ers training camp. The team has added Anthony Davis to the 90-man roster, and to make room, they placed nose tackle Ian Williams on the reserve/non-football injury list. The move means Williams is done for the year, as this is the equivalent of normal injured reserve. He had the multiple offseason ankle surgeries, and it would appear he is not making sufficient progress in his recovery.
This is a big blow to the 49ers defensive line, and now opens the door for another nose tackle option. Quinton Dial has nose tackle experience, and Mike Purcell has gotten work there as well. Glenn Dorsey played nose tackle the last time Williams was injured, but he is rehabbing an ACL tear. If he can be back in training camp, he would likely also get a shot at the nose tackle role. In the meantime, we wait and digest this news.
