Golden Nuggets: Unofficial Depth Chart Revealed

The San Francisco 49ers released their 1st unofficial depth chart in anticipation of their 1st preseason game this Sunday against the Houston Texans. Head coach Chip Kelly mentioned earlier in the offseason that the depth chart is written in sand. Other than a few players, a lot of the starting positions would have to be won in training camp and in the preseason games.

The biggest position battle in training camp has been the quarterbacks. As anticipated, the 49ers revealed nothing about who would start by naming both Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert as co-starters on Sunday. How Chip Kelly and the coaching staff use the QBs on Sunday no one knows, but it will be interesting to see. Both will see time with the 1st team offense and they will need to perform when given the opportunity. Blaine seems to be leading the competition due to having the whole offseason to work with the offense, so Colin needs his upcoming game action to make strides in closing the gap.

In the other roster spots, the inside linebacker position next to NaVorro Bowman also did not have a starter named. Ray-Ray Armstrong, Gerald Hodges, and Michael Wilhoite were named together. As most thought, Quinton Patton and Bruce Ellington were named starters next to Torrey Smith at WR. Jimmie Ward and Tramaine Brock were named starting corners and Shaun Draughn will back up Carlos Hyde.
