Golden Nuggets: QB Depth Addressed

The San Francisco 49ers were down to 2 quarterbacks after Sunday’s game. Thad Lewis, as expected, was placed on the injury reserve list and will be out for the rest of the season. Colin Kaepernick is still dealing with what is being called a “dead arm”. That leaves the team with only Blaine Gabbert and Jeff Driskel as the only healthy arms on the team.

On Tuesday, the team made a move to address their lack of depth at the quarterback position. Former 1st round pick, Christian Ponder, was signed to the roster. The 49ers now have 3 QBs from the 2011 NFL draft. He will help take the workload off of Gabbert and Driskel. Colin is not expected to throw for at least a week while trying to get healthy. He last threw a pass Wednesday in training camp at Kezar Stadium.

The health of the quarterbacks is now magnifying the play of the offensive line even more. Only Joe Staley is a definite starter on the line. The rest of the positions will need to be earned in these preseason games. The coaches have made it clear that the 5 best players will make the starting lineup. With 2 rookies and a veteran returning from retirement, the battle for the last 4 spots should be fierce. The potential for the line to be good is there. They will need to be to keep the quarterbacks healthy this coming season.
