Video from Kate Scott’s first game as 49ers play-by-play radio announcer

Later tonight, when the San Francisco 49ers take the field against the Denver Broncos, KNBR’s Kate Scott will be handling radio play-by-play duties. She took over the radio duties for these first two preseason games because Ted Robinson is in Rio for the Olympics. Robinson is the TV announcer for 49ers preseason games. Normal radio PBP person Bob Fitzgerald was bumped up, and Scott then took over Fitzgerald’s duties.

The video above shows some footage from the first game, and gets some insight from Scott and her colleagues at KNBR. Additionally, Sacramento Bee columnist Ailene Voisin wrote up a solid feature about Scott’s opportunity.

I bring all this up because it’s a pretty huge deal. Scott is just the third woman to do play-by-play work for an NFL game. One day we might finally reach the point where this isn’t a big deal, but for now, it’s big. Saturday marks the last of her two games, but hopefully we see more of her in the role in the future.
