49ers announce Arik Armstead, DeForest Buckner, Bruce Ellington all not playing

The 49ers will be without a handful of players. We break down the notable news.

The San Francisco 49ers announced who will not play in their preseason matchup with the Denver Broncos. The list includes QB Colin Kaepernick, WR Bruce Ellington, WR DeAndre Smelter, DT Glenn Dorsey, DT Arik Armstead, DT DeForest Buckner.

The most unexpected would be Buckner. He practiced this week, and there was no mention of any injury. Trent Baalke told the assembled media in Denver that he is dealing with a soft-tissue lower body injury. He said it is minor and it is a precaution holding him out. Chip Kelly will meet with the media after the game, and I’m sure he’ll get a question about it.

The notable absence from the list is Will Redmond. Last week he worked out before the game, but was unable to go. It would appear he is good to go today. That means we might see some of him in the nickel role. Chris Davis is handling first team work as the nickel back, but Redmond should get plenty of work there tonight if he is in fact able to go.
