49ers sign WR Ryan Whalen, waive/injured Jered Bell

The 49ers need some camp depth at wide receiver, and it appears they have found someone.

The San Francisco 49ers have made a roster move. The team announced on Tuesday that they have waived/injured rookie safety Jered Bell, and signed wide receiver Ryan Whalen. If Bell goes unclaimed, he would revert to injured reserve or the team could work out an injury settlement.

Matt Barrows reported yesterday the team was working somebody out, but did not have a name. The 49ers wide receiver position is dealing with numerous injuries. DeAndre Smelter dealt with a hamstring injury in the offseason workout program, and it seems to still be nagging him. He has yet to play in the preseason.

Whalen was a sixth round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2011. He spent three seasons with the Bengals, collecting 11 receptions for 80 yards in 17 regular season games. He was released in 2014 training camp, and did not connect with a team until signing with the Minnesota Vikings in 2015. He went through training camp, but was released at the end of camp. He will wear No. 81.
