The San Francisco 49ers lost their 3rd preseason game on Friday at Levi’s Stadium. They fell 21-10 to the Green Bay Packers. The big story before the start of the game was the anticipated return of Colin Kaepernick. Colin missed the first two games of the preseason due to an injury. By the end of the game, Colin’s play on the field was not a story at all.
Colin made it on the field in the second quarter after Blaine Gabbert had led a scoring drive to tie the game 7-7 take a 7-0 lead. He did not fare well at all. He finished 2 of 6 for 14 yards. He rushed for 18 yards. He only generated one first down on three drives and had three passes broken up. Colin looked rusty and indecisive coming back from injury.
Considering it was only his first game back, he will likely have one more shot in the preseason to make this quarterback competition an actual competition. Blaine Gabbert has not been great, but he has been a serviceable quarterback and seems to have a good grasp of Chip’s offense. Colin will need to make major strides in practice and the next preseason game just to make the team. Hopefully, the added pressure of the national anthem controversy will not affect his performance in the next game. All eyes will be on him because of it.
