The San Francisco 49ers placed Jaquiski Tartt on the Active/NFI list to start training camp, but it appears he is close to returning to practice. Chip Kelly said at the start of camp that Tartt had suffered a quad injury. On Friday, Kelly said Tartt took his conditioning test. That would indicate his quad was good enough to take the test to make sure he’s ready to hit the practice field. Kelly said, “we’re anticipating getting him back shortly,“ so one would imagine that could happen over this weekend.
The 49ers claimed defensive back Cleveland Wallace III off waivers on Thursday. My initial thought was that it was because of the Tartt injury. Kelly said it went beyond that. He mentioned that L.J. McCray and Will Redmond have both been limited thus far. Both suffered torn ACLs last year, but are getting work thus far in camp. It seems like there are just a few extra reps for the defense to fill, and so Wallace will get some of that work.
The 49ers enter a “game week” on Monday, with their preseason opener Sunday, August 14 against the Houston Texans. The team does not have to release an injury report in the preseason, although Kelly might mention something about who won’t play in his final press conference on Friday before the game. Otherwise, we’ll just have to wait and see what the game lineup brings.
