NFL: San Francisco 49ers-Training Camp John Hefti-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers finished their 1st week of training camp and are having their 1st preseason game this Sunday against the Houston Texans. As expected, Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick are splitting reps in training camp. Coach Chip Kelly had mentioned that the preseason games will go a long way to determine who will be the starting quarterback for the 49ers.

Blaine Gabbert should be considered the frontrunner for the 49ers starting quarterback job when the regular season kicks off according to Matt Maiocco. He had a head start in working in Chip’s offense and seems to be a better fit for it. Colin will need to play very well in the preseason games and if Blaine happens to struggle, Colin could force his way into the starting lineup.

The stars of the 1st week are the 2 former Oregon players, Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner, and the corners. Armstead and Buckner are playing well against the offensive line and Armstead looks much different compared to his rookie season. The corners are getting the best of the receivers, but that’s expected in the 1st week. The receivers will hopefully get some rhythm with the QBs and make the corners’ job a little more difficult as training camp progresses.
