Colin Kaepernick, Nate Boyer meet in San Diego, discuss National Anthem controversy

Fooch’s update: Nate Boyer had this to say about their meeting

This is a pretty awesome story. Colin Kaepernick has faced intense scrutiny following his decision to sit for the National Anthem, but dialogue is slowly developing. Former Green Beret and brief NFL long snapper Nate Boyer wrote an open letter to Colin Kaepernick that showed support for the quarterback exercising his Constitutional right, but also wanted to better understand what Kaepernick is doing, and why he is doing it.

It turns out Kaepernick saw the letter. Jay Glazer is reporting that Kaepernick invited Boyer to San Diego to have a discussion today. Boyer told Glazer they spoke for 90 minutes and had an open dialogue. Kaepernick and the 49ers invited Boyer to be their guest at the game, and it sounds like he will be on the sideline for the game.

This is exactly the kind of thing that is good about what Kaepernick did. It angers people, but it gets people talking. It’s not going to solve the ills of the world, but this is a perfect example of the kind of engagement that can happen. It’s a fascinating time.

Here’s Glazer’s full comment on the matter:

My man @nateboyer epitomizes what's RIGHT in this country. Credit to Colin Kaepernick who invited Nate down to San Diego to have an open dialogue today. Nate said they spoke for about 90 minutes, both presented their sides, thoughts and talked about compromise and NOT dishonoring those who've served. "Being able to move forward and understanding what his message is but also understanding what that flag means is important. We talked about change a lot and how to get positive change to happen. We talked about issues that are taking place in this country and how to prompt change but i also reminded him the great freedoms and luxuries we have in America." Nate was also invited by Kap and the 49ers to be their guest for tonight's game so Nate is planning on standing w the team.
