Over the weekend, former NFL quarterback Trent Dilfer had some comments about Colin Kaepernick’s protest, calling it irresponsible. Dilfer pointed to Kaepernick’s role as a backup quarterback, and how his role is to be quiet, stay in the shadows, and get the starter ready for Week 1.
Kaepernick was asked about the comments following the 49ers Week 1 victory, and he had pointed criticism of Dilfer. Jennifer Chan got some video of it, and the first sentence below that missed her video was transcribed by Tim Kawakami.
Opening:
I think that’s one of the most ridiculous comments I’ve heard. The fact that you say, “you’re a backup quarterback, stay in your place,” that’s an issue. I mean, to me, you’re telling me that my position as a backup quarterback and being quiet is more important than people’s lives. I would ask him to really have a conversation with the families of people that have been murdered, and see if he still feels that way. Cause I bet you he doesn’t, just cause he hasn’t experienced that type of oppression.
On where it’s coming from:
Umm, I’m not sure. That’s something where, I hope goes home and really thinks about what he said, and how it impacts not just me, but how it impact people whose lives are affected by these issues on a daily basis.
