This is kind of interesting. Seattle's Garfield High School faced off against West Seattle in a Metro League contest, and the entire Garfield football team took a knee during the National Anthem. They were joined by some teams from the West Seattle squad. The West Seattle coach did not join some of his players, but he did help them craft a letter explaining their reasons for taking a knee.
The NFL has been the focus of Colin Kaepernick's National Anthem protest, but we have seen it spread beyond the NFL. Soccer star Megan Rapinoe, college athletes, high school athletes, and others have offered up a demonstration in support of the causes Colin Kaepernick and now Eric Reid are raising with their protest. Antoine Bethea and Eli Harold joined on Monday Night Football, raising a single fist in the air.
The single fist dates back to Tommie Smith and John Carlos protesting at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics. Smith and Carlos worked with now 49ers advisory, Dr. Harry Edwards, in trying to develop a boycott of the games. When that fell through, Smith and Carlos won medals at the Olympics and each raised a single fist in a black glove during the medal ceremony.
