The San Francisco 49ers released their first practice participation report for Week 3, and Anthony Davis is listed as a DNP for Wednesday. He suffered a concussion in practice last Thursday, which resulted in him not traveling with the team to Carolina.
The concussion protocol requires a player be asymptomatic at rest before he can be cleared to return to exercise and then to football activities. The fact that Davis did not participate at all means he has not yet been cleared for football activities. If he shows progress on Thursday, he would likely practice in the blue non-contact jersey and be listed as a limited participant. But, we have to wait for the practice report before we know his progress.
If Davis is unable to play on Sunday, the team would have a couple options. Last week, they had Marcus Martin and Joshua Garnett active as reserve linemen. Left guard Zane Beadles was designated the swing tackle in case either Joe Staley or Trent Brown got hurt. Nothing happened, but had Beadles been needed, Garnett would have moved in at left guard.
The other option would be activating John Theus. The rookie has been working at both tackle positions. Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said Theus is making progress, but did not offer anything beyond that.
