Chip Kelly talks about Colin Kaepernick No. 2 quarterback

New, comments

The 49ers head coach discussed the QB position in his Monday press conference.

Chip Kelly met with the San Francisco 49ers media on Monday, and naturally he got questions about the quarterback position. Earlier in the day, Kelly told KNBR that Kap was not quite back to 100 percent from his lengthy layoff.

At his noon press conference, Kelly was asked about Colin Kaepernick and his health. He again talked about him being down a bit from his normal playing weight. Someone asked about Christian Ponder starting if Blaine Gabbert got hurt since Kap is not quite back, but Kelly again said that Kaepernick was the number two QB.

Colin Kaepernick is our number two quarterback. I don’t think he’s 100 percent right now so that’s why he’s our number two.

Kelly has repeated said that Kaepernick was his No. 2 quarterback, dating back to the end of the preseason. That being said, it seems like we’re dealing with some slight linguistic gymnastics in describing the quarterback situation. If health is the issue for his current depth chart position, wouldn’t the team want a healthy Christian Ponder active and ready? Or maybe Kaepernick is healthy enough to go on in an emergency, but not much more than that. I don’t really know.
