Carlos Hyde wanted to stay in the game and compete

Why keep the RB in when the game was out of reach, or was it?

NFL: San Francisco 49ers at Seattle Seahawks Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

The score in Seattle at the beginning of the fourth quarter was 30-3 and not in favor of the San Francisco 49ers. With the game seemingly out of reach, Carlos Hyde and his team were not about to throw in the towel, even after only being able to record 5 first downs in the first three quarters.

There were thoughts on if Carlos Hyde should have been in the game late when it seemed like the game was out of reach, especially with his history of injuries. Chip Kelly addressed his reasoning in his Monday afternoon press conference.

At that point in time it was a, two-point gets you to 19 which is a three-score game. So, you’ve got two eights and a three. You never know. We’re going to keep playing and keep going and seeing what can go on. I don’t know the exact time. I think two minutes to go. So, we’re going to just keep playing and keep, you don’t have a whole heck of a lot so it’s not like you can say, ‘Hey, let’s go put our second O-Line in.’ We’ve only got two guys, so it’s just part of the deal. We’re going to keep playing.

Hyde who was only able to rack up 36 yards through three quarters, ended up with 103 yards, 2 TDs and a successful 2 pt conversion. You could argue that the running back still felt had something to prove to himself after a challenging week 2, or that it was play during garbage time but it must be noted that the starters for the Seattle defense remained in the game until the bitter end.

Here’s his the full transcript of his post game interview:

How did you feel the run game faired?

We had some success in the run game. two yards here, three yards there, but Seattle has a really good defense, so you have to take what you get and just capitalize off of that.

What happened on the first play of the game?

It was just a miscommunication. I heard one play and coach called another play.

Was this the same old Seattle defense?

Yeah, It’s definitely the same defense, same tough guys. They have a really good group, they have been playing together for a while. They won a Super Bowl together and they still play sound defense.

How can you turn around this offense?

Just minimize the three and outs. Get better at drives, do better in that area. We had too many three and outs. When we get third downs, just capitalize, that’s all. We have plays, we just need to capitalize.

How will you prepare for the Cowboys?

What I need to do is keep the same attitude I had coming into the Seattle game. I need to keep running the ball and just do the best job I can.

Do you feel pressure to get the run game going to open up the offense?

It doesn’t really matter. Whatever the coach calls, it doesn’t really matter, we need to execute.

Did you have to lobby to stay in the game late?

I didn’t. I thought coach was going to take me out but I was glad he didn’t. I didn’t want to go out. I love competing in Seattle. That’s a really good group right there.
