Fooch’s note: Site decorum is off
Well, there we go. San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis has announced to the NFL that he is retiring immediately. This marks his second retirement in as many years.
He suffered a concussion a week and a half ago, and had not been cleared for football activity through last week. He retired a year ago in the offseason due to concerns about the physical and mental toll of football. If he is still dealing with concussion symptoms after his most recent practice concussion, I can see why he would decide it’s time to hang it up for good.
The 49ers will have an open roster spot once they place Davis on the Retired list. They will likely use it on another offensive lineman. They have Alex Balducci, Fahn Cooper, and Norman Price on their practice squad. And of course, they could add somebody off the street. The team likely will not have media availability until Wednesday, so we’ll wait and see what the coaches have to say.
