The San Francisco 49ers are a bit short-handed at tight end as they begin preparations for the Dallas Cowboys. The first practice participation report does not post until Wednesday, but in the meantime, we have updates on Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek.
TE Vance McDonald (hip) is not practicing, Garrett Celek (hip) is in no-contact jersey. Blake Bell healthy, Je'Ron Hamm on psquad. #49ers— Matt Barrows (@mattbarrows) September 27, 2016
It is worth noting that Tuesday’s practice was a walkthrough, according to the coordinators. McDonald left Sunday’s game in the second quarter with a hip injury, and was ruled out later in the afternoon. Later in the game, Celek took a bad hit from Kam Chancellor to what appeared to be his back. He subsequently returned to the game.
Odds are pretty good at least one of these two tight ends will be available this Sunday against the Cowboys. However, if at least one is absent, Blake Bell will see an uptick in playing time. Additionally, Anthony Davis’s retirement leaves a free roster spot. Je’Ron Hamm could get a promotion from the practice squad to fill that spot. Long snapper Kyle Nelson can play tight end as well, but that would likely only be in case of an in-game emergency.
