Colin Kaepernick’s time as a 49ers starting quarterback could be coming quickly now. After another poor offensive showing and Blaine Gabbert’s limited ability, Colin could get the nod in the next few games. While the offensive problems cannot be all on Blaine, a starting quarterback will take the most heat for the problems.

Colin is continuing to work on regaining the weight he lost in the offseason. Chip Kelly is still reluctant to play Colin until he regains his normal playing weight, but Colin made it clear that if he was called, he would play right now for the team. One of the reasons that Colin isn’t starting now could also be the fact that the 49ers opening schedule is very difficult. The Rams, Panthers, Seahawks, and Cardinals have good defensive lines and could be trouble for a still below weight Kap. The risk of injury could be too great for Chip to want to risk it.

After the Thursday night game against Arizona could be an ideal time to start working on Kap getting the starting nod. Colin will have 2 and a half weeks, if he starts now, to go on his eat lots of food diet to get to his playing weight before that start at Buffalo on October 16th. The team will have a week and a half to prep with Colin as the starter if Chip decided to make the move. If Blaine and the offense do not get any better over the next 2 games, it will likely be time for Colin to see if he can add a spark that is so desperately needed.
