49ers vs. Cowboys: A prospector's guide

New, comments

We take a look at pertinent facts, figures and history in the Week 4 matchup with the Dallas Cowboys.

The San Francisco 49ers are back home in Week 4 after back-to-back road games. They host the Dallas Cowboys in a rivalry that has lost a lot of its sizzle. They’ve had some exciting games their last two meetings, but the importance is not quite the same as it once was.

The 49ers opened as a 2.5-point underdog, and money is quickly coming in on the Cowboys. 64 percent of public money was on Dallas as of Wednesday morning, and the line has climbed to a field goal at most sportsbooks. The more that line goes up, the more inclined I am to bet on the 49ers. They are coming off an ugly loss in Seattle, but I think Dallas will be a little overvalued coming off that win over the Chicago Bears. The Cowboys are certainly not a bad team, but their defense still has questions, and Dak Prescott remains a rookie quarterback.

The 49ers have tumbled down the DVOA ratings from No. 10 to No. 26. They rank No. 30 in DAVE, which factors in preseason projections. Their offense ranks No. 28, their defense ranks No. 9, and their special teams rank No. 24. The team added wide receiver and returner Keshawn Martin to the roster on Tuesday. I don’t expect him to make a huge difference, but maybe some different options can shake things up a bit.
