Cowboys injury report: LT Tyron Smith misses second straight day of practice

New, comments

The Cowboys might be playing a backup on Dak Prescott’s blind side.

The Dallas Cowboys posted their second practice participation report of Week 4, and while Dez Bryant remains a DNP at practice, there is another notable name on the list. Left tackle Tyron Smith did not participate in Thursday’s practice, a day after missing Wednesday.

Smith is dealing with back spasms, which cost him last week’s game against the Chicago Bears. Reports last week said his back tightened up last Friday, but yesterday, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said that Smith seemed to be improving. He said Smith seems to be getting better, and improvement is all you can ask for.

"He seems to be moving around more comfortably," Garrett said. "We continue to get feedback from players and see how he feels. He's moving around better, and we'll just see how he functions as the week goes on.

"I don't want to get into the medical treatment that he's gotten, but typically these back injuries take time and you want to see progress from day to day and we've seen that."

That Friday report will give us a little more clarity. If Smith gets in even a limited session, it would not surprise me if he plays Sunday. However, if Smith cannot play this Sunday, Chaz Green would get the start in his place. The Cowboys offensive line is already expected to miss left guard La’el Collins. That offensive line has solid depth, but as arguably the biggest strength of the team, it is taking some serious hits. And to potentially lose two guys on Dak Prescott’s blind side is a big deal.
