Fooch’s note: The NFL released the formal transaction report. All four players mentioned here have formally been claimed.
The San Francisco 49ers did not claim anybody on waivers Sunday morning, but they have lost several players. We know about Garrison Smith to the Seattle Seahawks, but now the 49ers have a handful of additional players getting claimed. Pro Football Talk is reporting the Cincinnati Bengals claimed Jeff Driskel, the Philadelphia Eagles claimed Bryce Treggs, and the Cleveland Browns claimed Corey Lemonier.
The San Francisco 49ers cut quarterback Jeff Driskel on Saturday, and it would appear any development plans for him are not going to happen. There were reports after cuts that the 49ers hoped to sign Driskel to their practice squad. The team spent a sixth round pick on him, and while he struggled passing in the preseason, he showed a lot with his legs. It would have been worth the practice squad spot to see what they could do with him.
The 49ers head into the 2016 season with Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, and Christian Ponder. They don’t have a developmental prospect at this point, but I have to think they sign some kind of quarterback to the practice squad. And considering Gabbert is a free agent after this season, and Kaepernick’s status remains tenuous, they have some work to do.
Treggs was believed to be a practice squad candidate after his MCL sprain, but that is also not going to happen. The 49ers have other young WR options to potentially develop if they clear waivers, but this is not exactly ideal.
