The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Chris Harper to the practice squad. Harper had mentioned it was going to happen yesterday, but he had to get from Massachusetts to the Bay Area to get the contract signed.
The Patriots signed Harper in 2015 as an undrafted free agent out of the University of California. He was cut at the end of training camp and opened the season on the practice squad. He was eventually promoted to the 53-man roster, and had one reception for six yards. The team released him at the end of training camp.
I spoke with Rich Hill from Pats Pulpit to get his thoughts on Harper. He offered up some comments and a few links:
Big fan. I think he'll eventually be good and wish he had more of a chance. Body type is like a Golden Tate/Emmanuel Sanders/Marvin Jones, but not nearly as talented. Not as athletically impressive in any facet, not a crisp route runner. But I still think he has the base ability to eventually succeed if a coaching staff commits to him.
