Football is back in our lives, y’all! Well, real, regular season football instead of the preseason, offseason, draft, or whatever else. The 2016 NFL season gets under way Thursday evening as the Denver Broncos host the Carolina Panthers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. The game kicks off at 5:30 p.m. PT on NBC. Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth, and Michele Tafoya will have the call.
I was a little surprised the NFL went with a Super Bowl rematch for the kickoff game. Although, they don’t get the next season rematch that often, so I suppose it makes sense to take advantage of it in this situation.
The Panthers are a field goal favorite in this one, and money is heavy on their side. The Broncos head into this game starting what is likely going to be the brief Trevor Siemian era. Although Denver’s quarterback situation is problematic, I think they end up covering that field goal spread. And I actually am picking them for the outright win. That might be pushing it a little much, but I think their defense will keep this thing close, and they have the other skill positions to get the job done. I think we see a fairly low-scoring game, with the win coming by a field goal or less.
The 49ers don’t get going until Monday, but fans can use this game to prepare for the team’s Week 2 matchup in Carolina. The Panthers will get an extended respite between matchups, while the 49ers will head to Carolina on a short week. It’s not an ideal turnaround for Chip Kelly’s squad, but it will certainly provide a useful early challenge.
