Chris Davis remains sidelined, Keith Reaser returns to practice

The 49ers welcomed one of their cornerbacks back to practice. But will nickel be a huge deal against the Todd Gurley offense?

The San Francisco 49ers were back on the practice field Friday morning, and there is some good and bad news. According to the beat writers, nickel back Chris Davis continued working on a side field with trainers, suggesting he will be a DNP for the second straight practice. The good news is that Keith Reaser was back at practice, with the media predicting he will be listed as limited for Friday’s session.

The 49ers will need capable cornerbacks against the Los Angeles Rams, but my guess is we see a lot more of the team’s base defense than we will see in future games this season. The Rams have Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt in the passing game, but this offense revolves around Todd Gurley. These are two teams that are going to be grinding away on the ground, which means defensive line depth is what could prove more important.

The 49ers will see plenty of Austin and Britt, but Jimmie Ward and Tramaine Brock will get the bulk of the work. If Davis can’t go, Reaser likely takes over as the nickel back, with Rashard Robinson and Dontae Johnson serving as the backups outside. Ward can move inside to nickel as well if there are any issues with Reaser’s ankle.
