49ers injury report: Glenn Dorsey returns to practice

New, comments

This could be huge for the 49ers defensive line.

The San Francisco 49ers released their second practice participation report of Week 1, and we have some improvements. Earlier today, we discussed Keith Reaser’s return to practice. He was listed as a limited participant with his ankle injury, a day after missing team drills entirely.

The other notable news was Glenn Dorsey returned to practice. The 49ers defensive tackle had not done team drills up to this point while rehabbing his torn ACL. Chip Kelly said on Thursday that Dorsey remained on track for Monday, but he sat out Thursday’s practice. A return on Friday is a step forward for him.

With Ian Williams out for the season, the nose tackle position has been a question mark. Mike Purcell has handled the bulk of first team reps, but Dorsey and Quinton Dial both have experience at the nose. The 49ers will likely spend a sizable amount of time in their base defense against Todd Gurley and the Los Angeles Rams, so more defensive line depth will be a big plus. We don’t know for certain if Dorsey will play on Monday, but if he does, will we see more of a rotation there?
