The interviews for the next San Francisco 49ers general manager and head coach are in full swing. The latest coaching interview was with Washington’s offensive coordinator Sean McVay. Sean is currently the youngest coordinator in the NFL and if he was hired, he would be the youngest head coach. He has helped in the development Kirk Cousins and helped Washington rank #2 in passing yards per game in the NFL. He carries connections to the glory days of the 49ers. His grandfather led the 49ers front office when they won their 5 Super Bowls.

Sean’s name was added to the 49ers coaching interview list along with other hot candidates Josh McDaniels and Kyle Shanahan. All 3 are offensive coordinators and are young, upcoming coaches. The biggest decision they will have to make if they are hired is who is going to be the quarterback for the 49ers. Jimmy Garoppolo has been a rumored target if McDaniels is the head coach. The other likely candidates would come from the draft. North Carolina’s Mitch Trubisky and Clemson’s Deshaun Watson have been rumored as the pick for the 49ers at #2. Watson led the Clemson Tigers on Monday to a come from behind win in the National Championship game against a vaunted Alabama defense, which likely helped his draft stock tremendously. He threw for 420 yards and 3 TDs against a defense with a lot of future NFL starters.

On the GM search, the 49ers interviewed Brandon Beane on Monday, the current assistant GM for the Carolina Panthers. They have already interviewed the Packers Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst, the Colts Jimmy Raye III, and Vikings’ George Paton. They are scheduled to interview Seahawks executives Trent Kirchner and Scott Fitterer as well as ESPN’s Louis Riddick. According to reports the Packers’ executives seem to be the favorites for the job. Whoever is hired as the GM will have a lot of money at their disposal to rebuild the roster from the ground up.
