Mel Kiper positional rankings: No sure thing quarterback, instead a lot of questions

New, comments

The 49ers need a quarterback desperately. This year’s class offers more questions than answers, as we see in Mel Kiper’s positional rankings.

The 2017 NFL Draft season is slowly getting underway, and important dates are fast approaching. This coming Monday is the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft. That will be followed by the first two all star games, the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and East-West Shrine Game on Saturday the 21st. The Senior Bowl is the following Saturday, and then we have a brief lull before the 2017 NFL Combine.

With the draft season officially underway, ESPN’s Mel Kiper released his latest round of NFL Draft position rankings. Some of the players Kiper included are still making their decision, but he included them for the time being.

We’ll go into plenty of these positions, but I wanted to start with the quarterback position. The 49ers have plenty of needs on both sides of the roster, but quarterback is where it all starts. The 49ers might not spend their first round pick on the position, but they will likely be looking at virtually all the available quarterbacks. One asterisk denotes a junior, and two asterisks denotes a red-shirt sophomore.

1. *Mitch Trubisky, North Carolina
2. **DeShone Kizer, Notre Dame
3. *Deshaun Watson, Clemson
4. *Patrick Mahomes, Texas Tech
5. *Brad Kaaya, Miami (Fla.)
6. *Jerod Evans, Virginia Tech
7. Nathan Peterman, Pittsburgh
8. Chad Kelly, Mississippi
9. C.J. Beathard, Iowa
10. Antonio Pipkin, Tiffin

DeShaun Watson is the guy everybody is talking about right now following a strong performance in the national title game. Kiper does not view Watson as a first round pick, and it sounds like some NFL personnel people agree.

Mitch Trubisky and DeShone Kizer have gotten plenty of chatter up top as well, and those three will get plenty of chatter. But plenty of analysis will be needed for those day two and day three quarterbacks. Chad Kelly is a guy who will get some love because of his big arm, but I absolutely love a line Bomani Jones has used to describe him. He very well could work out, but more than likely he will get a general manager fired.

How would you rank the top five or ten quarterbacks in this class?
