2017 NFL free agency: Breaking down the Washington cap space, potential free agents

New, comments

The San Francisco 49ers will have a ton of cap space. We’re going to take a look at the potential free agents for the 31 other teams around the NFL.

I will be doing a series of articles that will be taking a methodical team by team approach to next year’s possible free agents. I will be starting with the team that has the least amount of salary cap space and ending with the team with the most. I will try to give a brief description of as many of the possible free agents as I can. I will also be looking for players that might be salary cap cuts in order for their teams to make room to sign some of these possible free agents. Any information anyone else can contribute on these players would be very much appreciated.

Washington is projected to be $61,040,111 UNDER the cap (all salary info via Over The Cap) for 2017 and with 58 players under contract. As of January 1, 2017, OTC has combined the leftover cap space from 2016 with each team’s projected cap space for 2017.

Dollar figures listed are player’s 2016 cap hits.

QB Kirk Cousins - $19,953,000

Kirk Cousins is 28 years old and was originally drafted by Washington in the fourth round of the 2012 draft. Washington used the franchise tag on Cousins in 2016 and there is some speculation that they might do so in 2017. I believe the first day they can do that is on February 15. Cousins averaged 307 passing yards per game.

WR Pierre Garcon $10,200,000

Pierre Garcon is 30 years old and was originally drafted by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2008 draft. Garcon signed with Washington in March of 2012. He had 79 receptions for 1,041 yards and three touchdowns last season.

34DT Chris Baker - $4,275,000

Chris Baker is 29 years old and was originally picked up by the Broncos as an undrafted free agent in 2009. Washington signed Baker in September of 2011. He had 47 tackles, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles this season. PFF had him rated as the 19th best inside defender this season.

TE Vernon Davis - $2,381,250

Vernon Davis is 32 years old and was originally drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2006 draft. Washing signed Davis in March of 2016. He had 44 receptions for 583 yards and 2 touchdowns in 2016. Anyone want to buy some stock?

34OLB Junior Galette - $600,000

Junior Galette is 28 years old and was originally picked up by the Saints as an undrafted free agent in 2010. Washington originally signed Galette in July of 2015. He has had torn Achilles tendons the last two seasons along with being suspended for domestic violence. Another great pass rusher bites the dust.

34DT Kendric Golston - $410,822

Kendric Golston is 33 years old and was drafted by Washington in the sixth round of the 2006 draft. Golston was on injured reserve for most of the season with hamstring problems.

34DE Cullen Jenkins - $564,706

Cullen Jenkins is 35 years old and was originally picked up by the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2003. Jenkins was signed by Washington in September of 2016. He had 16 tackles and 1.5 sacks.

S Donte Whitner - $458,824

Donte Hitner is 31 years old and was originally drafted by the Bills in the first round of the 2006 draft. Hitner signed with Washington in October after being discarded last winter for around four million dollars in much needed cap space by Cleveland (to be taken as humor). He had 66 tackles and one forced fumble in his partial season with Washington.

34DT Ziggy Hood - $625,625

Ziggy Hood is 29 years old and was originally drafted by the Steelers in the first round of the 2009 draft. Hoodie was signed to a one year contract by Washington last February. He had 33 tackles, one sack, and one forced fumble in 2016.

C John Sullivan - $728,824

John Sullivan is 31 years old and was originally drafted by the Vikings in the sixth round of the 2008 draft. Washington signed Sullivan in September after he was released by the Vikings. He played in 13 games and started one. He still seems like he might be a better center than what we already have.

CB Greg Toler - $680,000

Greg Toler is 32 years old and was originally drafted by the Cardinals in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. Washington signed Toler in April of 2016. He had 18 tackles last season.

ILB Terence Garvin - $750,000

Terence Garvin is 26 years old and was originally picked up by the Steelers as an undrafted free agent in 2013. Washington signed him to a one year deal in March of 2016. He had 16 tackles and 0.5 sacks last season.
