49ers interview rumors: To interview HC candidate Josh McDaniels, GM candidate Chris Ballard, request interview with Nick Caserio

The 49ers have their first formal interview requests in.

The San Francisco 49ers are getting busy in a hurry as they begin the process of overhauling their football operations department. FOX Sports NFL reporter Peter Schrager reported the team will interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels this weekend. Matt Barrows tweeted the team will interview Kansas City Chiefs director of football operations Chris Ballard this weekend. Adam Schefter tweeted the 49ers will have requested an interview with Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio.

The 49ers have a lot of options in front of them, and these are all names of people who are high on various lists for vacancies this offseason. I am not a big fan of interviewing coaches while still trying to find the GM, but McDaniels is an exception. Because the Patriots are in the playoffs, and are probably going to be there for a while, it makes sense to get an interview done during their bye week. Additionally, if the 49ers decided to potentially try and pair McDaniels and Caserio, it would make a lot of sense.

We’ll keep a running tally, but these are the first formal interview requests reported thus far. It is worth noting, Schrager and Barrows are reporting the interviews with McDaniels are happening, while Schefter is reporting it as the request is in. We’ve seen in the past how quickly things can change with regard to who interviews where.
