There were rumblings that Jim Tomsula may make his NFL return soon and now it’s coming closer to reality. The former San Francisco 49ers head coach and defensive line coach interviewed with the New Orleans Saints for the latter position. The report comes from Alex Marvez of The Sporting News, citing two sources. Tomsula would come to replace fired Saints defensive line coach Bill Johnson.
Tomsula took over as the head coach of the 49ers after the team ‘mutually parted ways’ with Jim Harbaugh. Before his head coaching role, Tomsula coached the 49ers defensive line for seven years. His head coaching career with the 49ers lasted only one season and he was fired after a 5-11 record.
After his firing, Tomsula went underground and out of the spotlight. Beyond a picture of him without his trademark mustache, nothing surfaced on what the coach was up to following his release from the 49ers.
He was on Washington’s radar and now we can add the Saints into the mix. While his head coaching career was met with disaster, Tomsula managed to remain as defensive line coach through three different coaching regimes in San Francisco.
But the Saints defense would be a new challenge entirely.
