49ers hiring John Lynch to be general manager, per Adam Schefter

This is out of left field, but it would appear the 49ers have a general manager.

This is what you call a curve ball. ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting the San Francisco 49ers are going to hire former NFL player John Lynch to be their next general manager. The team interviewed George Paton and Terry McDonough, but Jennifer Chan and Matt Maiocco both reported there was a mystery third candidate. Lynch would appear to be that guy. Schefter is reporting he will get a six-year contract.

Lynch is entirely out of left field. He currently works as a color analyst for FOX’s NFL coverage, and has no front office experience. He played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 1993 to 2003, the Denver Broncos from 2004 to 2007, and briefly with the New England Patriots in 2008.

Although he has no experience, he played for Mike Shanahan in Denver. Kyle did not coach for the Broncos during this time, but I have a hunch Mike had positive things to say about Lynch, and probably introduced them in various instances. We have also heard PFT say there is chatter Kyle could potentially get his dad a job, so maybe that factors into this.

Who knows, but there is a lot to figure out.
