The San Francisco 49ers have set up interviews with Josh McDaniels, Kyle Shanahan, and Anthony Lynn for the coming days. Those are arguably the three most notable names that will be interviewing for jobs the next couple weeks. However, this will almost assuredly not be the complete 49ers list.
One name that has been thrown around, but has not been added to the interview list is Sean McVay, Jay Gruden’s offensive coordinator in Washington. FOX Sports NFL reporter Peter Schrager believes the 49ers are interested and will potentially want to interview him. The Los Angeles Rams have already set up an interview with McVay.
If the name sounds familiar, it is because his grandfather is John McVay. Grandpa McVay served a couple terms with the 49ers, with the most pertinent being from 1980 to the mid-90s. He was a key cog in building the 49ers dynasty, and the team dedicated their draft room to him this past September.
The younger McVay is still relatively inexperienced, so it would be a bit of a roll of the dice bringing him in. He is 30 years old and has nine years coaching experience. Here is his resume since spending his college years from 2004 to 2007 playing wide receiver at Miami (OH) University:
2008: Coaching Assistant, Tampa Bay Buccaneers
2009: Tight Ends Coach, Florida Tuskers (UFL)
2010: Offensive Assistant, Washington
2011-13: Tight Ends Coach, Washington
2014-Present: Offensive Coordinator, Washington
The age thing will be a hang-up for a lot of folks, but as Schrager pointed out in the link above, Washington players and other coaches have been raving about him. The offense has made some big strides during his time as OC, so that is something to keep in mind above and beyond the fact that he is 30. Some will point to Lane Kiffin struggling as head coach at a young age, but Kiffin has repeatedly been proven to be kind of a scummy dude. If McVay does end up landing an interview, age will be brought up a lot in the media. We’ll see if McVay is able to overcome that, or if he’ll have to wait and “pay his dues” as some will probably prefer.
