San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York told the media on Monday that anybody in the organization still under contract is allowed to look for work elsewhere. He said the new GM and head coach would make all decisions on the rest of the staff, but in the meantime, anybody under contract could look for other opportunities without concerns about tampering charges.
We have two assistants already out the door. Tight ends coach Jeff Nixon was hired as Baylor’s co-offensive coordinator, and now we are learning that quarterbacks coach Ryan Day is expected to join the Ohio State coaching staff in potentially a dual role as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
The big question for some 49ers fans is what the turnover will mean for running backs coach Tom Rathman. He has always been a popular coach, and has managed to survive numerous coaching changes. It would be entirely a guess as to whether or not he sticks around for another coaching staff. The new head coach might decide to include them in the interview process, but I am guessing most are looking for new jobs as we speak.
