The San Francisco 49ers are going to interview Indianapolis Colts vice president of football operations Jimmy Raye III for their vacant general manager position, according to Matt Barrows. Raye currently reports to Colts general manager Ryan Grigson.
Raye’s name is obviously familiar to 49ers fans. His father, Jimmy Raye II was Mike Singletary’s offensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010, and had a distinct issue with that dad gum yahoo. The younger Raye spent one year playing in the NFL, and one year as an offensive quality control coach for the Kansas City Chiefs. In 1996 he joined the San Diego Chargers as a scout. In 2000, he was promoted to director of college scouting. In 2008, he was promoted to director of player personnel. After the 2012 season, he joined the Colts in his current role as VP of football operations.
In his current role, he basically serves as Grigson’s No. 2 in the Colts personnel department. The Colts website described his role as follows:
With the Colts, Raye works closely with General Manager Ryan Grigson on personnel matters. In addition to assisting with the roster, salary cap and free agency process, Raye also contributes extensively with preparation for the NFL Draft, the NFL Combine and prospect visits. Dating back to 2014, he has handled the college free agent process.
The 49ers currently have interviews scheduled Thursday with Green Bay Packers executives Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst. They are expected to interview New England Patriots executive Nick Caserio this weekend, likely before or after they interview Josh McDaniels for the head coaching job. They are scheduled to meet with ESPN analyst Louis Riddick early next week in New York for an interview.
And just because it would not be a Jimmy Raye post (whichever one of the family!) without it, here you go:
