49ers GM candidates: Team to interview Vikings assistant GM George Paton Friday

New, comments

The 49ers have added a candidate who sometimes turns down interviews. Check out our full list of candidates here.

The San Francisco 49ers are going to turn the end of the week into a two-step through the NFC North. On Thursday, the team will interview Green Bay Packers executives Eliot Wolf and Brian Gutekunst. Now we are learning that on Friday, the 49ers will meet with Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton. Matt Maiocco first reported the interview, with Tom Pelissero confirming the date.

Paton has interviewed for jobs in the past, and was said to be under consideration in Atlanta two years ago. However, he is also one to turn down interviews if he thinks a better situation is out there. Back in 2015, our Vikings blog had this to say about Paton:

Paton (pronounced like "Patton") is in his eighth season of working with the Vikings. He has worked with current Vikings' GM Rick Spielman at his stops in both Chicago and Miami. He has declined several interviews over the past couple of years for GM positions, including interviews with the Chicago Bears, the New York Jets, and the St. Louis Rams.

Paton seems to be happy with being Spielman's right-hand man at this point, given the number of opportunities he's turned down. Still, with a Falcons' team that has a first-year head coach and is moving into a new stadium soon, perhaps the Atlanta job would be enticing enough for him to jump ship.
