Kyle Shanahan coaching staff: Two Falcons offensive assistants on the radar already

New, comments

The 49ers do not have a coaching staff yet, but Kyle Shanahan is reportedly targeting some Falcons assistants.

Kyle Shanahan will not officially become head coach the San Francisco 49ers until next Monday, but we have some early reports on his potential coaching staff. Sporting News NFL columnist Alex Marvez is reporting Atlanta Falcons assistant coaches Mike McDaniel and Mike LaFleur are “strong candidates” to join Shanahan’s staff.

McDaniel has served as an “offensive assistant” for the past two years, during which time he assisted the team’s wide receivers coach. He has focused on wide receivers the past six years, and would seem to be a candidate to be the team’s wide receivers coach.

LaFleur is a little less experienced. His brother is the team’s quarterback coach, while Mike serves as an offensive assistant. He was a coaching intern with the Browns in 2014, and has been with the Falcons the past tow seasons. Prior to that he worked in lower level college football. My guess is he would potentially end up in a quality control type of job, although given Shanahan’s own expected work with quarterbacks, maybe LaFleur gets a bump to QB coach.
