The San Francisco 49ers dance card continues to fill up. The team has requested permission to interview Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, per Jason La Canfora. McDermott has already interviewed with the Buffalo Bills, and is expected to interview with the San Diego Chargers. Matt Maiocco tweeted that the interview will happen next week, but time and location are still being determined.
The Carolina Panthers struggled in a big way this season, but offensive inconsistency was the bigger issue. Under McDermott, the defense finished ranked No. 10 in the league, according to Football Outsiders. A year ago, Pro Football Focus named him a runner-up for defensive coordinator of the year.
McDermott was a grad assistant for one season at William & Mary in 1998. Since then, he has worked entirely in the NFL. He spent ten years with the Philadelphia Eagles, working his way around the defense. He starter in various lower tier roles, then was promoted to secondary coach in 2007. He took over as linebackers coach in 2008, and then was defensive coordinator and secondary coach in 2009 and 2010. He took over as defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers in 2011.
