San Francisco 49ers v Arizona Cardinals

For the 2nd week in a row, the 49ers took a game into overtime. For the 2nd week in a row, they lose in overtime. The 49ers dropped their 5th straight game to start their season and it was the 4th straight game losing by a field goal or less. They have lost those 4 games by a combined total of 11 points. The 49ers defense held the Colts offense to just 6 points in the 1st half, but they tired out and gave up 17 points after the half.

Brian Hoyer and the offense has not be doing the 49ers defense any favors. The defense held strong again, but the offense could not sustain drives until the 4th. By that point, the 49ers were down 23-9. Hoyer was able to lead the offense to 2 touchdown drives in the last 8 minutes of the game, but the Colts were able to kick a field goal in overtime and win the game 26-23.

The biggest development to come out of the game was the playing time of NaVorro Bowman and Carlos Hyde. Hyde made way for Matt Breida for long stretches, while Bowman was subbed out for Brock Coyle. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is known to use 2 running backs and he said that he wanted to go with the hot hand against the Colts, which was Breida at the time. Bowman played most of the defensive snaps, but seeing him on the sidelines for any period of time is interesting. Kyle mentioned that he is trying to keep Bowman fresh, which makes sense because the 49ers defense is averaging around 80 snaps a game. Both Bowman and Hyde will have to be okay with spliting time as the season goes on.
