We’re back for another week of NFL football, and once again, the San Francisco 49ers find themselves looking for their first win of the season. Week 6 has the 49ers heading east to face Washington. The game gets going at 10:00 a.m. PT on FOX, and will have Chris Myers and Daryl Johnston calling the game from the booth, with Laura Ukmin on the sideline. calling the game from the booth, and Peter Schrager on the sideline. The 49ers are as high as a 12.5-point underdog, according to our friends at Odds Shark.
This is just a slightly weirder game than it might otherwise have been. The 49ers released long-time veteran linebacker NaVorro Bowman, marking the end of an era. It also marks the beginning of another era. Rookie linebacker Reuben Foster might return for this game, and even if it takes another week for him to return, he is going to be one of the vocal leaders of this defense.
The 49ers are a double digit underdog, and one has to wonder how they will respond to the release of Bowman. The defense has shown significant improvement from last year, and even though the team is not getting wins, we’re seeing important progress. However, coming into the final game of a three-game road trip might be a bit too much to cover a spread currently sitting between 11 and 12.5 points.
Reuben Foster and Eric Reid are both listed as questionable for this game. They returned to the practice field on Wednesday, and got in three limited sessions through the week. My guess is they play, but we’ll wait for pre-game inactives. One player who definitely will not play is Kyle Juszczcyk. The fullback suffered a back injury last week, and after three straight DNPs at practice, he was formally ruled out.
Washington will be without cornerback Josh Norman, who suffered a rib injury prior to their Week 5 bye. The notable other injury this week is running back Rob Kelley. He aggravated an ankle injury prior to the bye, and is doubtful. In his absence, we can expect to see a lot of Samaje Perine and Chris Thompson. Tackle Trent Williams is questionable after getting an MRI on his knee earlier this week, but he is expected to play.
Here is a full rundown of how to watch today’s game.
