C.J. Beathard replaces Brian Hoyer in 49ers starting lineup

Change is upon us.

NFL: Carolina Panthers at San Francisco 49ers Kelley L Cox-USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers offense has been a mess, and we are now seeing a change against Washington. C.J. Beathard has entered the game as the team’s new quarterback, replacing an ineffective Brian Hoyer.

Beathard started warming up after Jimmie Ward almost had an interception. That was overturned, but Kirk Cousins threw an interception on the next play, and Beathard entered the game. Hoyer had been 4 of 11 for 34 yards. Hoyer didn’t get help from his receivers, but he also showed his characteristic inaccuracy.

The 49ers trail 14-0, and will look for any kind of spark they can get. Kyle Shanahan had said all positions are in a competition, but he seemed comfortable sticking with Hoyer. That clearly changed as the 0-5 49ers look for any kind of offensive spark this week.

Fooch’s update: Beathard complete his first pass for 13 yards, and Matt Breida dropped his second pass.
