The youth movement is in effect on the 49ers roster. Rookie quarterback C.J. Beathard was given his shot in Sunday’s game at Washington and had a decent performance. He led the 49ers to a comeback, only to fall just short. His play allowed Kyle Shanahan to name him the starter going forward. Now he will have the full week to get ready for the Dallas Cowboys at home next Sunday.

The 49ers defense had played well this season, but on Sunday they had some issues. When the 49ers released NaVorro Bowman during the week, the linebacking corps took a major step back. Kirk Cousins and Washington took full advantage of it. RB Chris Thompson had a good receiving day with 105 yards and Vernon Davis had a big play while being covered by linebackers. Linebackers Ray-Ray Armstrong and Brock Coyle had a rough day and the 49ers will be relieved when rookie Reuben Foster is able to come back from injury.

Arik Armstead could miss the rest of the season. He suffered a broken hand and will need surgery to fix it. This is the 2nd straight year that Arik has needed surgery and will miss significant time. The 49ers could also be without Aaron Lynch for at least a week with a calf injury. These injuries mean that rookie Solomon Thomas and veteran Elvis Dumervil will need to play more snaps than they were expected to have.
